Audience Research

Audience research is important in the planning process as it would give me a chance to see what the audience would be expecting the video of my song to be like, I can then decide whether I would like to follow the expectations or go against it. My audience was randomly selected which is good as it would give me a variety of ideas from fans of many different types of music, the audience also is a mix of male and female, the only same variable is the age.

I played my song to an audience, without showing the original video, and I received these answers for the questions I asked and presented it as an info graphic.

Shot Variety & Pace (Foo Fighters Animatic)

In preparation for the making of a music video we researched the techniques, shot types and variety and the editing speed used in a real music video. We used the music video for the song 'The Pretender' by the Foo Fighters and created a storyboard of all the shots of the first 45 seconds of the video, I then edited those pictures together in Premiere Pro to create an animatic.

I cut the images to be the same length as the shots in the real music to match the pace of the video. This task gave me a better understanding on how you accurately plan shots and storyboard for my final music video and also gave me practice in editing fast cuts to the beat. Lastly this also gave me an idea on how long a shot usually lasts and the variety of shots there are in real music videos. I will now be able to transfer this knowledge to when I am making my own music video.

Copyright/Gaining Permission

Before making my music video it's important to consider the copyright laws as a majority of music is copyrighted. This meant that when I was looking at potential tracks to use for my music video I had to send e mails to several artists try and gain permission to use the track.

I sent an e-mail to 'Wolfie's Just Fine' enquiring whether I could use their song but unfortunately I did not get a reply from them or any other artist I asked permission from.

Here is one e-mail I sent in an attempt to gain permission:

Since I was not able to get permission I had to instead see how strict YouTube is on re-uploading the song "It's a Job," because for some songs the artist claims copyright but allows the video to stay up and gets the profit from advertisers instead of the money going to the original person who uploaded the video. To see how strict YouTube was on the copyright of this song I uploaded a 'test video' with the song in it to see what action YouTube would take.

Here is the 'test video':

Fortunately there seem to be no consequences and so I am allowed to use the song without a fear of it being taken down by YouTube.
